asityYellow-Bellied Sunbird-Asity – Neodrepanis hypoxantha
The Yellow-Bellied Sunbird Asity is endemic to Madagascar and occurs at higher altitudes, typically in upper montane forest, which is low-canopied and mossy. It has a tiny body with a short tail and a fine, strongly decurved beak. During breeding times males have a black plumage, widely edged brilliant royal-blue. The underparts are an intense buttercup yellow. Females usually have brighter yellow underparts, sometimes approaching the intensity and uniformity of males, but mainly duller. The Yellow-Bellied Sunbird Asity feeds on nectar and insects. It is a very curious bird and males often approach within one metre to investigate an observer. Then the male can be seen leaning forward on a branch and lifting its head to display the brilliant yellow throat. This experience may only last one or two seconds, so photographers need to be fast on the shutter.

bensonsBenson’s Rock-Thrush – Pseudocossyphus bensoni
This specie was formerly known to breed only in the area between the Mangoky and Onilahy rivers in south-west of Madagascar. Breeding populations have recently been found in the high-mountain zone of the Andringitra National Park. The Benson’s Rock-Thrush is endemic to Madagascar but listed as nearly threatened due to slash-and-burn farming procedures.
